Killing our Duck today 💔

I always get all females from major hatcheries by mail like MurrayMcMurray or Metzer farms
Also they sell them sexed at some feed stores
Most feed stores only sell Peking or Khaki Campbells or sometimes Swedish…I’ve never seen Welsh Harlequin but then again I’ve not been to every feed store! :D

There was this one time I got 10 ducklings straight run (NOT sexed) and ended up with 7 drakes that I had to rehome. they probably went in someones soup pot. But anyway After that I never again got straight run.

This hatchery says they have Welsh Harlequin ducklings shipping now and the minimum order is one duckling…but I would definitely suggest getting two so they can grow up together.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about this hatchery :)

Oh I dont know what breed the op wanted. I have 2 welshies they are wonderful.
They have a mallard I’m pretty sure…I’m just suggesting Welsh Harlequin because there’s even less chance of a surprise male since they’re almost autosexing.

Thanks for the recommendations I’m definitely making sure this time it’s a female before I buy one I don’t ever want to have to do that again😭

I am sorry you are having to go through this! :hugsDo you have another duck available for your hen? She will be lonely without a companion... Perhaps you could set up a pen with netting for the two to roam in during the day?
We are getting a female duck for her in a few weeks maybe two so she can have some friends! She likes sleeping with the hens she was doing this before we killed the Mallard which makes me think he may have been bullying her too.

Yea I’m better now we did end up killing him my husband did it thankfully. My female duck is acting weird now I feel so bad for her but she’ll be ok eventually😭
Ever think of “rehoming” over KILLING HIM?
There were so many other options available and he wasn’t sick and suffering.
I could never end an animals life unless it was in terrible pain and suffering!
I believe that you took the lazy way out. 😢

Usually, I would agree- I do animal rescue and have never taken the life of/euthanized any animal that isn't in extreme pain or towards the end of their life. BUT, I must ask, have you ever dealt with an aggressive drake or rooster?

I had 6 roosters at one point. Our locality only allows 1 roo per household. I even kept them inside the house to keep them put of trouble.. I loved all of them, but one began to get very aggressive and would attack every chance he got. I tried for 4mos to find someone that would take him, and even begged a friend of mine to see if his boss would accept the roo- even as a meat roo. It is HARD to rehome a male bird that isn't a parrot, and sometimes the person with the aggressive animal doesn't have the time to wait to rehome...

Before you make such a judgement, consider being in another's shoes... and if you're still vehemently opposed but can offer no other solution, take the birds in need of rehoming yourself. I'll help cover shipping costs 🤨
