Somewhere on here there is a great article about kindly putting a chicken out of misery. I can not find it. If anyone has a link? Or can tell me the name of the product used? I keep thinking break fluid?

I cut the jugular veins on each side of the neck while the chicken is hanging upside down. Some use tree loppers with older chickens, while scissors work in young chicks to remove the head. Some use the dislocation or broomstick method. Whatever method used it should be quick and humane. How old is the chicken in question? The method you mentioned is not break fluid, but engine starter fluid or ether, an anesthetic. I have not used that, nor would I recommend it.

No, I'm not asking how to do it. I mean, thankfully my girls are all well. There was a great article here (I know it's on here somewhere) about literally putting them to sleep. It sounded very peaceful and easy on them. I just can't remember the chemical that was used. Something used for cars I think. I was just looking to reference the article . But thank you!

I don't know of any chemicals that could put a full sized chicken to sleep like that that you could purchase that also meet the AMVAs requirements for humane euthanasia.

Not every article has humane suggestions. :(

There are a lot of threads about ways to euthanize chickens. They may or may not be reliable, safe, or humane. Ether (the ingredient in starting fluid) is an anesthetic that was first used in operating room, and using it in chickens is not without risk. Here is one that you may be referring to, but continue to read all of the posts later:

Maybe this one for chicks?

Personally for chicks I decapitate. This article is very good.

For pullets/hens I use the broomstick method.

For cockerels/roosters I usually cut the jugular. (their necks are generally more muscular)

While not my favorite thing to do - the methods I use can be done anytime without having to find a container, a product to use or anything like that. Quick and done.
