I hatched out eggs I bought locally form a lady who has black copper Maran. I also bought Olive egger eggs from another lady, and a few Lavender orpington from a 3rd lady.

I have figured out that if they look like maran, but have beards or muffs they are Olive egger.
Also, if their legs are the wrong colour..probably olive egger.

But there are some that LOOK like maran... but they are barred..? ( like bottom left of first photo)... or I have one that is grey with copper neck and feathered feet, and I have one that is primarily black with feathered feet and a touch of copper on neck, but then two others that are primarily black with feathered feet, but their necks are completely copper.

1st photo- bottom left? is that a maran?
- centre of photo- is that a Lav Orpington cockerel or pullet? (9 weeks old)

2nd photo- I have two barred cockerels like that one- is that a maran (pure) ??

3rd photo- those 3 have copper necks- but one is grey, they other two are black

I want to keep my best olive egger roo and my best copper maran roo only.
Thanks!!!

Photo #1: Yes, the 'barred' is a Cuckoo Marans. The Orpington in a pullet
Photo #2: Cuckoo Marans and Black Copper Marans
Photo #3: 1 Blue Copper Marans, 2 Black Copper Marans'
I just learned this, so I'll tell you too, it's Marans not Maran. You would say, "I have a Marans chicken"

Excellent. Unfortunately I only need one marans rooster . LOL
Too bad the rest aren't hens.. (only have 4 marans hens)

Could you tell me if I have a splash marans roo with BCM hens what will the outcome of breeding be, as opposed to BCM with BCM , or Cuckoo maran with BCM ????

Is there a certain % that will come out splash or cuckoo? or what??
I didnt seem to get any splash maran hens or cuckoo maran hens.
only BCM hens.

I'm no genetics expert, so sorry. And I only have two Marans' so not an expert there either. However, when Marans breeders have a flock consisting of BC, Splash, and Blue Copper they say when you buy eggs or chicks from them you could get all 3 colors. So i'm guessing any breeding pair would result in chicks of all 3 colors.

There are a lot of charts around showing blue genetics or BBS (Blue/Black/Splash). The basics are that a chick with no black diluting gene ends up black, 1 gene ends up blue, and 2 (1 from each parent) becomes splash.

I don't have much experience with marans specifically, though. We only have a few to make olive eggers.

There are some great experts over on the black copper marans thread in the breeds section. I'm sure they'd be helpful if you're curious which ones to keep.

Great birds! Good luck with them.

Thanks so much-!!!

trying to find that thread, but can only find the BBS marans thread....

Sorry, I should have given more detail than that.

It's in "General breed discussion and FAQ" and the thread is called "International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP". They're active there so the thread is almost always towards the top.

I've learned a ton about BCM just from browsing there.

If you're looking for variety in chick color you may want to keep the best Blue Copper Marans cockerel. When crossed with a BCM you have a 50/50 chance with each chick to have either blue or black chicks.

Your cuckoo marans cockerel will give you all cuckoo chicks when crossed with BCM hens.

Oh, and also forgot to answer your question- if you breed a Splash BCM to BCMs you'll get 100% blue chicks.

The most interesting cross is Blue Copper X Blue Copper where with each chick you have a 25% chance of BCM, 50% chance of blue, and 25% of Splash.

It seems to be true that BCMs lay the darkest eggs, with Blue and Splash being close behind.

I'm a huge fan of Marans- hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
