What are 'spite' ratings?

A spite rating is when someone, usually anonymously, rates an article with one star without leaving a comment as to why, when the rest of the ratings are say fours and fives.
Not agreeing with something in the article, or not liking the author, or trying to annoy the author are possible reasons. They are fairly easy to spot.

Ah, thanks......best to just ignore that kind of foolishness.
On the other hand, a lot of 'likes' and 5 stars are given with no real assessment of content.
