Most days i walk past a homeless guy in the city, he is always sat in the same spot, on a fairly quiet street, out of the way, never causes anyone any harm, always has a smile for me and my other half as we walk by.
We are bikers and one day walked past him and dropped a glove, we hadn't noticed but he chased us up the street and handed the glove back to us. We were just about to pop into a cafe and get a cup of tea so invited him along, but he refused saying he was quite happy in his spot.
A couple of weeks ago, we walked by him and he looked very misserable, he gave the usual smile and said hello, but his smile was forced, he was not his happy self, so we did what we had to do and on the way back picked him up a sandwich, carton of juice and a packet of flapjacks, gave them to him and said he looked like he needed cheering up, his usual smile returned and he then went on to say he had been attacked earlier that day, in broad daylight in a city centre and nobody came to his aid, some guys had just told him they didn't like "his sort" and set on him. That simple gesture of a sandwich and a drink made his day, is was nothing fancy, just one of these 3 quid meal deal things from a local shop.
We saw him a few days later in his usual spot and he said he had got a few quid together and insisted he took us for a cup of tea. We tried to say no,, but he was having none of it, so there we were, 2 professional people on a good salary, taking tea from a guy with pretty much nothing in this world, but the fact that we eventually accepted seemed to cheer him up.
As we were leaving I said to the other half that I felt guilty taking his money as he can ill afford it and we have enough, she turned to me with a smile and said "Dont be, I slipped a tenner in his coat pocket while he was ordering the drinks".........
I felt much better then. We often stop and chat with him now, he is such an interesting guy, he knows it was us that gave him the ten pounds, but we just keep saying he cant prove it !!!!
