Hey guys,
First time posting here.
We're fairly new to keeping Quails but we just hatched our second ever clutch of King Quails.
12 healthy babies hatched out; one that only hatched out a few hours ago looks like it has a splayed leg (but we're allowing it to just walk around on the bedding to see if it will straighten out before we splint it) and one, sadly didn't make it due to it not fully absorbing it's yolk sack before it hatched out.
We have a few eggs left in our incubator and we candled them to see if we should expect any more babies. Out of the ones that we candled, we took the ones that looked like they were dead and made holes on the side of the egg where the air cell is to see how far along the chick was before it stopped developing.
One of the eggs we thought had stopped developing as it had an air cell WAY bigger than any other that we had seen in any of the other eggs but it turns out there is a chick inside (oops, our bad. We're still learning).
We're unsure whether it's alive or not at this point but we're thinking it may be dead as there is a medium sized red spot (Not like bleeding or anything, just a pinky red still lump) in the egg which looks like it's it heart. This isn't actually the reason that we're posting here though. The reason that we're posting here is because, upon looking into the egg, we noticed that the chick (unlike its brothers and sisters) seems to have miniature fully formed adult feathers, rather than the small hair like/ stringy "feathers" that as i'm sure you know, baby quails are supposed to have. And even then, these miniature feathers seem pretty large.
Wondering if this has happened to anybody else before and if so, do any of these chicks ever survive? And if so is this genetic, would these parents produce one like this again?
Thanks for taking the time to read this
