ok hear me out...I hatch a lot of fowl. We are building a chicken coop. I also have a milk cow. My husband (he is a plumber) is going all out for this coop. He is putting hydronic heat in and running water. (Obviously for watering but also washing things, etc) so he is putting in an industrial sink and added a wing for my cow saying it would be warmer in there for milking. He wants me to decide where the “coop kitchen” should go so he knows where to bring the water up in the floor.

Here is the question: If you had a coop/milk barn with the option for a kitchen, how far would you go with it? Sink of course but fridge for storing milk? Workstation, stove, etc for butter and cheese?

Advice would be appreciated! And if anyone has something like this I would love to see pictures!

A frig for eggs and milk, I have an offer in on a house that has an historic bunkhouse. Here is a photo:

There is a freezer, I am putting in a stove for canning. I will use it to wash and store eggs, and process the roosters. This was built in the 20's -- the extra work kitchen for this old place. In AZ, there is a process to get certified as a commercial kitchen. If I were building new, I would get the requirements and follow that. Then if you want to sell your products, you could.

Put the kitchen between the coop and the milking parlor.
How big is this building?
Do you sell milk or just for your use?.....thinking about regulations.

Would love to see floor plans.
Oh right, here's the floor plans!...still planning the heated brooder area?

Gosh, I hope you start a build thread so we can watch along vicariously.

I’m with @aart, put the fully-loaded kitchen between the coop and the milking parlor. Since your DH seems amenable, make it as large as possible. Definitely check out your state and local regulations regarding selling milk/eggs/food and make it a commercial kitchen. That way, even if you’re not interested in selling stuff now, you can at a later date. If hubby is a hunter, he could also use the kitchen to process meat, so a stainless steel countertop/sink would be awesome. Check your local schools to see if they are planning any renovations, you can often get kitchen parts for very inexpensive prices. If you have a restaurant supply store in the area, that’s another great source. As is Craig’s List.

A big storage area would be nice too. An area for feed, hay, straw, brooder supplies, etc. would, in my case, get everything out of the basement and into the barn.

If you hope to someday make this a business, put in an area for your computer and printer too, plus an area to package up your products. (If you are goingthe business route, establishing your company first and then building the coop/barn could allow you to write off some of the building costs. Check with a good attorney.

Your local ag extension office could be of help too with design and sources. Or the local 4H or vo-ag teachers. There are always lots of folks around willing to give advice and ideas.

I mean hey, the sky’s the limit, so dream big!
