Kitten

If you read my whole post you would've seen the part where I said I am a huge spay/neuter advocate and have gotten 15 STRAYS fixed this year, so of course my own cats are fixed and have had routine exams. They don't have shots, but that's because I believe the additives in vaccines are toxic....but that's a whole other thread! LOL I keep their immune systems in tip top shape with a healthy diet of very high quality food. I meant I've only had to take my pets in to the vet once in the past 8 years for injuries/illness.

yeah, thats what i thought you meant too and our cat gets shots and stuff but wild animals dont get them so im sure pets are fine too (plus theres probably natural cures/remedies too) so im sure theyre ok, our cat's inside though (indoor/outdoor) as a pet, not a barncat though so shots are probably more important plus i think they may be required here but still, i kinda get where you're coming from, im sure you're a GREAT pet owner!

Thanks KDOGG331.

I take care of my pets as if they were my babies, even with my barn cats I check on each of them every day. And I'm taking care of the strays too, one almost died from a nasty double ear infection and I took her to the vet and have been nursing her back to health for the past few weeks, and taking care of her kittens.
The bashing is getting out of hand. I'm seeing people get bashed on here about the most ridiculous things and stuff gets taken way out of context and then assumptions are made. I agree, it's really annoying.

Baby raccoons and possums are very cute, would you have re-homed one, or have it killed? Sorry, a predator is a predator no matter how "cute" it might look.

Good grief!!!!!! You have got to be kidding me! Pretty much All baby animals are cute. I have neverwritten OR spoken about killing anything. I was simply reflecting on the sort of Trojan Horse like irony.

I agree with what is being said about the bashing... it has gone too far. Usually if cats are outside their immunity is built up more than if they were inside cats. Also I would like to bring up that all vacinations usually are able to be purchased at local co-ops with the exception of rabies. We have a traveling vet around here that charges $10 per vaccination. A little known fact is that rabies immunity lasts 3 years, but because cities use this as a type of animal tax, it is required every year.

I feel as though OP did what she could in that situation. I would not worry that the kitten had rabies. It does take several month for rabies to progress to a contagious state. That kitten could be no more than 8 weeks old. Also it is my opinion that the kitten is not a chicken killer, I have an 8 week old kitten myself and she would be hard pressed to kill a mouse at this point, much less than a chicken of equal or slightly larger size.

I do want to say that left up to our own descions and devices, we do what we feel like is the best for what outcome we would like of the situation we go through. No ones feelings or descion should be discounted. Remember it is her life and stress. I think that the outcome is the best and when the time comes, I am sure the needed altering would be done (anyone who has been through the heat cycle of a female cat or been around an intact male knows how annoying it is and will do what is possible to get the behavior to stop, albiet alteration).

I just wanted to put in my two cents worth. Mainly be respectful that folks might have other ways to deal with their situations. And if I had said anything out of line I am sorry, I am in a mood.

to the OP and thank you for keeping us updated.

also, is there really only one rabies shot? at our vet they have an annual shot and a 3 yr shot, we have always gotten the 3 yr one as it is easier to deal with, however we still take them in as needed and get the approriate shots and take good care of our animals and stuff, we just feel the 3 yr one is more convienent than having to go in every year (for the same shot) but is it really any different or is it just a matter of how often you want to get it or is it what the laws are too, are they just trying to make more money or what? im kinda confused now...

I'm pretty sure the 1 & 3 year rabies vaccines are exactly the same, they are just labeled differently due to state laws b/c some states require annual rabies vaccines (for dogs) and some only require the 3 year vaccines. Weird, huh?? And when you think about it, why do pets need to get vaccinated every year anyway? When humans get vaccines, the immunity they get from it is supposed to last anywhere from 7-11 years on average. Animals immunity from vaccines can last several years as well, but your vet won't tell you that. It's all about money. Vets make the majority of their money on vaccines. If pets were only getting vaccinated 1-2 times in their lifetime veterinarians would go out of business.

Yes they are the EXACT same vaccine. I'm a vet tech.

I second everything the poster above this one said.

I attended a highly prestigious rabies seminar and the modified-live vaccines (once given past mom's immunity) are good for the animals life. Once an animal is vaccinated (once past mom's immunity) the animal WILL NOT contract that disease. You would be very hard pressed to find a case otherwise.

The rescue I work for has been doing this for 16 years and has saved almost 10,000 cats and we only vaccinate ONCE in an animals life. (once past mom's immunity). We have NEVER had a single animal get sick in it's lifetime from something we vaccinated for.

MOST vets will not tell you this as vaccines are a HUGE money-maker for them!
