It'd be a pain to get the eggs out, I think...with the steps in there it doesn't look like you can easily get your hand in - you'd have to take the lid off every time??

Seems like a good old milk crate would be cheaper and work just as well....

I have 2 I use for nest boxes. They love it and the lid comes off easily. I got mine at PETCO. On sale I got $10.00 off with my PETCO card.

Why bother with that? As Arlee said, it's going to be a hassle to get the eggs out.

We have 3 nesting areas in our coop. One is a wooden box mounted against the wall. Above that is a small sheet of plywood at a 45 degree angle from the wall down to the front of that box. The 3rd is a milk crate.

We were just gone the last 2 days. When we returned there were several eggs in the milk crate, and a few more in the hidy-hold above the box. None in the exposed box.

Why spend $30 for something that will be awkward to get the eggs from each day when a cheap egg crate works fine and you can immediately see if there are eggs in it?

This past month in Backyard Poultry there were some photos of covered kitty litter boxes being used for nest boxes. I had been using milk crates, but the eggs were always getting pecked and dirty and stepped on, and half of the hens wouldn't lay in them anyway.

I put in two of the covered litter boxes and now ALL of the hens lay in there and the eggs stay clean! I love it. I think the hens like the privacy, and one of them is big enough that I have seen 2 hens go in there and lay at the same time!

I got one from a friend, and the other one I got at The Anderson's general store for $12.99. It was worth the expense IMO.

It might be kinda creepy sticking your hand in to feel around for eggs....... you COULD grab or stick your hand into a nice fresh poop
It would be a little inconvinient to take the top off each time you want to collect eggs.....

Perhaps you could cut an opening in that lid, and make some kind of little door to get eggs???
