Knock up coop

My dad with hubbys help built me a coop today. We originally purchased a prefab one and after reading all the comments on here realised how bad it is. No ventilation what so ever

Anyway just thought I’d share the new coop on here.
Dad scored some colorbond for $2 a sheet. He also happens to be a carpenter so had some wood laying around. We got some wiring for $22 and hinges for the door for $2... so all up this coop has cost us $26. It’s not as pretty or as costly as the prefab but it’s more spacious and a walk in, one that will ultimately make our chickens happier. Here’s them building it today.

We still have to secure the top of It. Mainly for the doves not to come in and steal the food, we really don’t get predators here though. So they will also free range a lot during the day.
Here’s some pics of the four I have. They are only six weeks old. Pretty sure some are roosters and they will have to leave. I originally only had two but grabbed another two hens the other day just incase.

Thanks mate if it wasn’t for this forum I probably would of just stuck with my two chooks and the original coop. We’ve introduced the other two chooks to the original two today and they are roosting together tonight in the new pen. I hope they are ok in the morning together but will get to them as soon as I wake up and chuck them back in our fenced veggie patch. They got along good in there today cos there is lots of hiding spots and room.

Are you planning on keeping your little pre-fab? That could come in handy for new chicks or for a chicken hospital.

No immediate plans for new chicks.

I’m unsure whether to seperate if a chook is sick. I read someone’s post saying if u seperate the chook they will surely die. But then I guess u risk the whole flock getting sick.

What is the number one thing you can do to prevent sickness?
What mainly kills chooks?

That post about separating ensures they die is incorrect. For the health of the flock and the well-being of an ill or injured bird, separation is sometimes necessary.

I personally have lost birds to egg binding, injury and wry neck. I've also treated a few birds for bumblefoot. Things happen sometimes regardless of our efforts, but it helps to prevent sickness if you start with healthy birds, provide nutritious feed, clean water and a well-ventilated/clean coop.

Awww bumblefoot sounds so innocent. Like a bumblebee. Until it stings huh .

We as kids had a chook die on us. Before it died it did a backflip. The poor thing. It was funny despite the situation though

Nice coop! Walk in is nice!

Would still keep the prefab (if you still have it) in the event you need to separate or for any pre-integration. You can Install vents at the upper part, below the roof.

As cute as it is getting day old chicks, this makes me never want to get chicks again.

Although I’m not convinced the barred rock is a male, it’s quite dark like a female
