Hands down, my Barred Rocks, Delawares and my one remaining hatchery RIR hen, all excellent foragers.

While mine are young, I have dominiques and austrolarps that do a pretty good job.

I am going to vote for sumatras. Mine (which have some gamefowl blood) stay in the overgrown field alot of the day. Also being black I think they are less noticeable to predators.

While not all chickens are created equal for foraging, some clearly forage better than others, another aspect is how far the birds will travel away from their coop. This varies.

Will the birds have enough food within 75-100 feet or will they need to travel further. THis is also by breed. Some will travel further than others. Just more food for thought! ( Couldn't resist!)
