I did a little research and I think the word "Koekoek" is just the color pattern "barred", not a breed, in another language.

That does not surprise me @Jayzandra I've not found anyone who seems to breed specific breeds here in Belgium. It seems that they work mainly with hybrids for people who want backyard chickens. If I'm wrong please say. I feel that the place where I bought my girls from deals with a person who just produces birds for profit. I know what that means for roosters and the welfare of the birds in general and should i want to add to my little trio I'd like to find someone who cares about the animals they are selling.

Ah...just saw this...no I still don't think you are wrong in my case. When I went down to the garden/pet/feed store to 'order' my girls the choices were, Brown, Black, Koekoek, White, Grey.....

Still...I love em to bits!!

Hi there please see my latest post. I will tell you anyway, Koekoek chickens were developed at Potchestroom Agricultural College here in SA. They are a mixture of Australop, White Leghorn and Barred Plymouth Rock bred for their suitability to African conditions. They are productive egg layers and lay for a long time. They also 'talk' all the time cheeping to each other, lovely.

Koekoek is also the dutch/flemish name for the color cuckoo, which is pretty much the same as barred, so you both are right .
