I had 3 hatchery hens, some of my favorite chickens. Broody, great mamas, even mothering as a group and taking over another brood when a mama was lost. Also the best "lap chickens" I've ever had. Lay a good number of medium size light brown eggs between bouts of broodiness.

I got some Black Breasted Reds from Sandhill to use as broodies. 3 of the 5 pullets went broody soon after point of lay. I hope they will cooperate this spring when I need them. The carcass is nicely shaped but small, they require some extra scalding, and are a little more difficult to pluck, than other birds. The eggs are white and small. They lay well though. Boy, can they fly! The good news is that they are rarely motivated to fly and respect my fence like the other birds.
