Howdy!
I joined this forum years ago and decided I needed to reintroduce myself! My husband and I live on a five acre hobby farm with three horses, six ducks (two Khaki Campbells, a Runner, and three Muscovy), three Silver Wyandotts layer hens, a rabbit, and more. My journey with chickens began 15 years ago when a friend gave me four Bantam chicks and the plans for a chicken tractor.
Several different chicken tractors later, I think my most recent variation will be replicated. I love to renovate, unbuild, rebuild, and repurpose. As a result, everything is screwed together. My favorite freebie? Old cedar fencing boards. They have weathered enough to be safe for the birds, are strong enough to withstand moving, are lightweight, and usually have no significant swelling or shrinkage. My girls are safe behind the 1/2" hardware wire mesh and that makes this farm girl happy!
We do love our ducks through and through. They are in pens (drakes in one and hens in the other) and get to wander the property when we are out with them. Mama Duck, the Muscovy, is a quiet sweetheart and popular with visitors. The other three are quite the quackers, Willow, Ash, and Spruce. They think slugs come from heaven (or at least the fattest ones) because we toss them any we find.
Truthfully, we love to eat chicken eggs but prefer our ducks' personalities over their eggs. Thankfully, our neighbors are always willing to eat duck eggs!
Happy farming!
