Bumping the thread. This is such an awesome and much unknown about breed. I have had my La Fleche for years now and the results are mixed.
Yes, they DO take long to mature. But they are sooo worth it! Glossy black plumage, upright, majestic carriage, friendly-not flightly birds.
Mine are in a large barn and run with lots of free range time. They stay in my chain link fenced yard, and are not wanderers like other breeds.
Some are of delicate disposition, I suppose due to their scarcity and not having much fresh input into them genetically. If I remember correctly, it is the White Faced Black Spanish and the Creve Couer that were blended to create this breed. Keep in mind it will simply take lots of time, space, feed etc to invest in this breed. You will NOT make a profit from raising them. This is a labor of love for us.
It is so sad to see so many people giving up on this special breed

. We (my family) are in it for the long haul and know that it takes time, dedication, and much patience to continue the breed. It is not profitable in any way-mostly because nobody even knows what the breed is. We simply are refusing to let this breed simply fade out and die. Everything in this generation is faster, bigger, NOW! Traditional heritage breeds that have been around since the 1800's are fading away because of the demand for 'fast' and large growing chickens....
As for me and mine, we will continue to hold onto and develop our birds to keep the breed from disappearing.
If you love La Fleche, educate others so there will be a demand to keep the breed on this earth.
