Labor day and my first egg!

I was really excited to see my first egg this morning! It was laid off the roost onto the poop board. The eggshell was really soft and this is a photo of it. I was just wondering if this is very common for chickens to lay in egg like this? I don’t know which of my eight chickens laid it, but I am thinking my Wyandotte laid it because yesterday she did not seem herself and her butt looks sort of poopie. It was almost like she had yolk or egg white on her vent area, but not sure. I am not even sure she was the one that laid it. Can anybody give me some insight? Thank you for your replies! Congratulations - they are starting. Strange things frequently happen when they start laying. Generally they square things away in a matter of weeks.

Yes, I was still happy even though it was splattered open on the poop board! Is that common for the shell to be soft like that?

It is sort of funny that it is on Labor Day! I was dreading that because everybody will be outdoors barbecuing and my chickens will be making a huge ruckus laying eggs!

New layers will often have funky eggs until their systems work out the kinks! It’s all good! Enjoy!

First eggs can often be softshelled.

A coop full or pullets is a great time to start doing butt checks.

In the beginning yes its common. What feed are you giving them and are you providing oyster shells?
