Hi
I just picked up this silkie cross that has lacing on him. What do you think i should breed him with a black silkie hen or a white hen. I was think of breeding him, then breeding his silkie feathered daughters back to him. To try to lock in the lacing while keeping the silkie feathers.

He has the silkie blue lobe and the his feet are a greeny colour with 5 toes.

I’d breed with black I think. White has a chance to cover things up since it could be dominant white. Unless you know it’s recessive white.

The problem is that he’s heterozygous for all the lacing genes and the silky gene. Which he doesn’t show silkiness because he’s heterozygous for it and it’s recessive.

Breeding to a black hen makes it so that each gene that’s heterozygous in him has a 50% chance to disappear in the offspring.

I’d breed him to the black hen and breed those chicks back to him and hope that luck runs well to bring back silkiness and some lacing genes.

If you're not going to try for another laced breeder bird, then the next best thing would be to breed him to a white silkie. White silkies are recessive white, which usually covers partridge patterning. Partridge is far more compatible with lacing than extended black is, and extended black is the pattern gene a black silkie carries.

However, lacing is a fairly complicated set of genetics. I'd make I'm willing to commit a lot of time to it before beginning a project that large. Start by researching. I recommend the site "edelras" for all your genetics needs.

Thats what i was thinking. Breed him to black. But will try white as well.

Would you only bred his silkie feathered daughters back to him?
Or normal feathered daugthers as well.

Want to also introduce the blue egg gene down the line if i can keep the lacing in the feathers.

Hi
Went out last night to put him in his house and he was gone, i looked everywhere. Looked again this morning and still couldn't find him.
Will look some more when i get home from work. But not looking good for my laced silkie project
