laid egg and died

Remember no bumping as per rule #6.

Other than chick stages of life, the next time where you can have random deaths is at point of lay. It happens here and there often because the physical/hormonal changes with stress of laying the first set of eggs can be rough on pullets. I wouldn't be too concerned, but a necropsy is the only way to get a "true" answer.

I agree testing would be a great idea if I didn't have a 6 year old saying we need to bury it right away and have a chicken funeral for ms. red. Any how I really feel the strain of the egg and the heat are doing them in its the only thing that makes sense and what silkiechicken said about balance and such add heat to that I I wanna croke too. Along with the fact they came from the same batch maybe a hereditary issue. And someone mentioned west nile what are the chicken signs of that? And is there a natural repelant you can put around them - I have not noticed any mosquitoes in my yard at all and no bites on us but I guess that doesn't mean they arn't there.

Speaking of repelants - have any of you used breweres yeast in the bed to keep fleas and mites away? was considering it becuase it works for cats but didn't know for sure about chickens and I can't find any info on it -- I'm looking for natural ways to keep all insects out fleas, mosquitoes, ants, and such.....

first time it has happened to me. TODAY. Went out at 3:30 my leghorn/cochin mix was in the nest box. I looked under her for an egg. she lays at least 4 every week. Nice cream colored egg... on the bottom left of my pic <----------

Anyways went out at 6:15PM, an egg was in 'her' nest box (she was the only one that ever laid an egg in it) and she was on the floor dead.

Granted it did hit 113 degrees today in my backyard and the AC had stopped working but they had fresh water etc...

Made me sick to have double bag her and put her in the garbage. She hatched out Jan1st so she was very young.

I have her last 7 eggs and they will all go into the bator tomorrow. She was beautiful.
