I have a 1.5 year old Indian Runner duck that came into my possession (with a group of 3 others) a week ago. Duck was born with a bad leg, but although looked funny walking was able to manage fine and generally keep up with the flock. The only thing we noticed is she would sometimes fall off the ramp exiting the coop in the morning. We have been noticing her being increasingly withdrawn and hiding a lot so today we picked her up and have confined her for observation. She is eating and drinking, but not a lot. Since she has been alone we have noticed she doesn't walk at all so I inspected her feet. Since her bad leg has always been different from her good leg it's hard to compare them since they are never the same (bad leg much skinnier than good leg). Her good leg is swollen, but not warm. My initial thought was bumblefoot so I took a picture of the bad leg which I have posted and I don't seen anything, but I am no expert.

I am thinking some kind of tendon or muscle injury since she has fallen out of the coop, but I want to ensure it's not an infection.
The entire leg is swollen from ankle to where the feathers start (possible more, but hard to tell since the other leg has always been much skinner)
Any thoughts??

Swollen...and warm? Hot?

Can the foot still move as it should(if you move it for her)?

When you move it for her is she clearly in pain?

If you feel all over, and can find no breaks, and the foot is warm but not hot....I would keep her isolated and assume it will get better with time. Hopefully she is not eating as much as she should because of the pain, and will improve in a day or 3. (As long as she is eating and drinking a decent amount, verses zero or tiny)

If however she is eating and drinking almost nothing, and/or there is a clear break, and/or the leg is super hot.....I would start worrying greatly and decide if the right choice is to wait a day or two to see if there is improvement....but then put her down... Or, if you don't want to put her down, now would be the time to take her to the vet, before she totally goes off her feed.

:hugs

Hi
Thanks for the reply
I can move the foot around in all normal directions without her seeming in pain.
The leg/foot is the same temperature as her other foot. No obvious breaks. She is isolated from the other animals so she is kept quiet and undisturbed.
Actually seems less swollen today, so I am hopeful :)

First, I am not a duck person, but they can suffer from B vitamin deficiencies (niacin and riboflavin.) That may not be her problem, but I would get some vitamin BComplex tablets, and crush 1/2 of a tablet daily into her food or a treat. That is an inexpensive way to give B vitamins, and since they are water soluble, it is hard to overdose.
