Landscape designers HELP!

CMV, great tips! Loved it!!!! I need to get out my garden book and cut out the pics of the plants and play with the colors, height and shade/sun needs.

Yes I love daylilies and irises. I do have them on the side of my house in the back so they are prized ones. They will stay there until it gets too big and then I can move them elsewhere. I love hollyhocks but they get eaten by bugs or virus dust that has been ongoing in the last two years of the neighbors within two blocks of us. Not sure what it is.

I love rudbeckias but not sure if colorwise appropriate.

Perhaps some lavendar? It the front you need some height. I would do a passion flower vine to hide the ugly railing, they'll die back in the freeze, but regrow each year.

Unfortunately, neither of those do well in a zone 4. I've spent a lot of money on different lavender cultivars trying to get it to survive winters, but with no luck even with heavy mulching. I would love to be able to grow it, but it simply isn't hardy enough.

I love lavenders the smelling kind! Sure I can grow those but not sure if they need sun most of the time. I could use them on the west side of the house.

Hubby wants to plant a small tulip tree in the middle, next to the house on the west side. Not sure if it would balance out but it's a neat idea. Not sure how far out they need to be away from the house NOT to rub or grow against the house or push against the foundation.
