There are many different kinds of wasps. Some are nasty vicious things. The sand wasps that I have around here are very gentle and have never offered to sting even when I petted them.
Paper wasps are a different story.

See, I make up for the spider hate with some snake love. I used to have several as pets. Not the copperhead though... I let that one go!No Snappy...just...no. I will become Snow White of the spiders before I snuggle a copperhead. lol
Um OWW!!A wasp flew into my mouth, stung me in the throat, and flew back out...gentle isn't exactly how I would describe its approach to shutting me up.
