Langshan Eggs in the Bator! Incubator sucks...

Whelp..that's the end of the hatching.

Total count: 3 Dead, 2 Alive.

Not very good odds at all....I'm trashing this POS and getting a still-air. Totally done with that...

That is what I been using and I dont get that bad of hatch from it, about 95% - 97%.
I do plan to make a sportsman type incubator this year, I have the heating element, fan and thermostat already.
All I have to do is get my but in gear and get the wood and build it.

Chris

Is yours a still air or forced air? I miss my still air terribly...

I'd get 85% hatches and higher, but this forced air I hardly get anything to hatch. Really depressing.

femalecbrown, PLEASE post photos of your chicks! You will not regret your decision in Langshans...they are simply the best breed!

Chris thinks otherwise I'm sure!

There the Hova-Bator with a"TURBOFAN" . I got them about 3 years ago from Randall Burkey when he had a sale on them, I paid $99.00 for the incubator and the auto-turner..
I like is but I need a bigger incubator.. Last year I had 3 of the Hova-Bators going and needed more..

This was a Little Giant Forced Air. Got it off of Ebay. I think it was $120 with turner?

I'll probably sell it for $75 or something without the turner. The turner will still work inside of the still-air incubator. As soon as the new incubator is set up, I'm moving the eggs for the next hatch over. Ironically there's only 3 eggs...let's see if I can get a 100% hatch in it!

Here are the two chicks that survived. One cockerel, one pullet:

HA! The new incubator is up and running, and is already settled right where I want it to be. I'm waiting a bit before moving the eggs into it, but am now looking to sell the forced air since apparently I can't work it.

Hey rodriguezpoultry
I talked to you a while back about getting Langshans and about near by breeders, anyway, I just wanted to mention, I have 3 incubators all foam ones (isn't that crazy?) the two I use to incubate are turbofan Hova-bators 2 different models and the one I use as a hatcher but also incubate with, is a still air Little Giant, which I had decent hatches with it, but the tempature was usually cooler on the edges and just didn't insolate nearly as well as the Hova-bators. The Hova-bator kind of sits "inside" the bottom tray, it's sort of interlocking I guess, while the little giant's sits on top of the bottom tray. Oh and the thermostat on the Hova-bators I find to be much more manageable, my little giant still air is pretty touchy. Just my experience with styrofoam incubators. I belive there is a still air Hova-bator too.
By the way, I did order some chicks from Murray McMurray, I know how hatcheries birds go, but I thought I would play around with them anyway, I just may get lucky with them. I ordered 12 white, 12 black, and 6 buff cochins plus they gave me a couple extras of the langshans.
Good luck with your incubating and chicks.

Oh, and how are you sexing your chicks?
and can you cross black and white together and get blue offspring in later generations?
I have a hunch the first cross will look like "shady whites" maybe.

ok.hey langshan man. sorry about the bad hatch rates. You should use a styrofoam incubator or a bucketinator bator they work quite well ! Want plans ???

Well sorry you got such a poor hatch I do have to say that I love langshans I went to a show that was a Langshan national meet very cool birds.

I'm sorry...who are you addressing as Langshan man? I'm female.

The egg color is a dark brown. Not as dark as a Marans, but darker than a cream-brown.

Here are some of their eggs:

The white one is a Minorca egg. Nope...they're not flighty at all. The pullets tend to be more flighty than the cockerels, but eventually they all calm down.
