Langshan Thread!!!

Aww! Too cute! On a side note, everything OK? I hope it was nothing serious! Hope you're on the mend soon.

Thanks. One more is still fighting to get out but odds aren't lookin to good.

Hospital was for a hernia operation, went alright and recovering now, just some serious activity restrictions for next 4-6 weeks.

So glad that it went well! Hope you recover quickly! Who gets chicken chore duty while you are recuperating??? Also, your chicks are adorable!

Cute chickies Matt! Haven't seen any ugly one yet ;). My two Lanshan hens went broody and hatched out 2 Buckeyes and 5 Lanshan. They are co-parenting. They babies are about a week old and they haven't taken them outside yet, just scratching around the barn still. They look so cute as a family. My rooster is good with the babies and helps find them little bugs.

My shipped eggs are hatching. Woke up to 4 little chicks this morning! 2 blue and 2 black with another pipped! Today is day 21. Only seven made it to the hatcher. I am stoke to be getting 5 of this line!!! Hopefully the other 2 pip. Pictures to come later!

PetRock, my parents and brother live close by and will be helping for the next 4-6 weeks til I can think about slinging feed bags again.

Lisa, congrats on the hatching! Hope the shipped eggs do well! I've got 4 ready to I in hatcher that are due Monday from rodriguezpoultry. (And one more from my whites)

I'll have to take some new pictures of the older chicks when I'm more mobile too.

Thanks Matt. I hope yours do well. I am going to have to get some next year from rodrigueapoultry too if she is willing. I want more Beaufords!

I did take a few pictures of my older chicks.

A few young ladies..A few of my chicks have a white feather on their wing. Do they go away after molt sometimes or should I worry?

The lone blue, Muffin Head, who is definitely a rooster with another boy. They seem to be very sturdy and wide, but these are my first chicks so I don't have anything to compare them to. Sadly Muffin Head's comb is somewhat side-ways. I guess we will see how they grow out. When it comes time to pick some breeders, I am definitely going to need you guys to help me out.

My rooster, Gavin, hanging out with the hatchery girls. His girls are busy raising chicks and he gets bored with them and hangs out with this gang. He is sitting on his hocks...

Another picture of Gavin checking me out...

LOL! LMiller, you're welcome to them. I just finished another dozen for another person and have culled down to my breeders and growing birds only as of now. I'll be overrun with LF Langshans soon I can tell. Thanks to broody #14, 15 and now 16...I won't need to use an incubator at ALL this year! lol!

I'm afraid the temps may cause some breeding issues, but so far the males seem to be breeding every female they can get to and all the eggs under my hens have been hatching. Maybe the temps will play nice for a bit longer?

Glad to hear it was nothing serious Matt! Please let me know how that hatch goes!

That's good to hear Mikaela! I have a few girls from you who will be part of my breeding program! One of the black girls is big and beautiful! Of course, I also have Gandalf my white roo and his girl Galadriel who hatched from your eggs. We are finished with 2 breeding pens and have 2 more to go. It has been so hot here in CA, that we have delayed finishing them. Who wants to be working outside in 113 degree weather!

Nice birds, Lisa! Your little blue boy looks just like my favorite little blue boy who is roaming my backyard. I am so hoping that he doesn't crow early so he can stay here for a while!

That's awesome to hear! So glad you could use them! I wound up getting another white hen. She'll be bred to my biggest and best male with the darkest eyes. Hopefully will give some nice chicks to start my whites back up.

Just stepping in for a bit to say hello And to say you probably won't hear from me much tomorrow thanks to the Toby Keith/Garth Brooks concert (seriously screamed at work when I got them!!!)

I have a quick Langshan breeding question - I have two Australorps and one Red Star about 10 days old and four new Langshan chicks shipping this week. Supposed to be all females but I've got serious doubts that one of the Australorps is a pullet because unlike the other he still doesn't have any tail feathers like the other two at all and he poops completely differently than the others. I mean the others go quietly and he will stop and pose and fire off a gummy bear nugget that sounds like a sneeze when he shats. It's the strangest thing but I kid you not his wing feathers are also shorter and developing more slowly. but I digress so back to my question.

I had oringinally thought about getting the Jersey's then read about their size going up to 13+ pounds and decided that was way too large for backyard chickens. (My goal being egg production with table game as secondary and manageability also a priority since we are new to backyard chickens). I then found and bought Australorps. So what would be the upside and downside to a cross breeding between Langshan chickens and Australorps? The Australorps say they have very good egg production 5-6 per week as opposed to 3-4 per week and being slightly smaller seems that makes sense they could be a little more efficient since smaller birds burn fewer calories moving about all day to forage right? Langshans sound a good deal more hardy and more like Jerseys which sounds closer to what I want in a smaller package hopefully manageable.

Thanks for any insights you can share into these two breeds and the pros and cons of mixing them or not.
