Langshan Thread!!!

What color eggs do Langshans have?  Croad Langshans?  I heard they are purple.  Is that true?  Does anyone have a photo of purple eggs?

Langshans lay a brown egg, some have a slight purple tint to them. It is much more subtle than you're thinking. If you're in America we ONLY have Croad Langshans. The extra wording is because is in Europe they have Croad, German and Modern Langshans.

Well, I lost Yule this last week due to heat stroke while I was gone to town on doctor visits. He just couldn't pull back out of it, it hit him very fast and hard.
I suck..

So Cissy is by herself til I get her a couple of companions. So yep, that not in a rush search for more stock kinda got kicked up a notch I guess. HELP MY SORRY KEESTERRRRRRRR
( I did manage to hatch a couple of eggs out, it'll be a while before we know the outcome of their crossing. they're only 8 weeks old now. )

I'll post a pic of Cissys eggs when I get a chance, she does have that lovely slight plum plume to them a lot of the time.

ETA: So sorry for your loss. Sucks when that happens. How hot did it get up there? Maybe mine are more attuned to it because the original line came from hot temps?

I absolutely would if I could. The temps have pretty much put a stop to any LF eggs being fertile at this point. When it cools down I'm sure I"ll have some available. Thanks to broodies, I probably won't need to keep any to hatch for myself later on...

That sucks, sorry for your loss. This heat has been hard on the birds down in this part of the state too.

I read somewhere that one strategy to employ in hot areas like Texas is to freeze 2 liter bottles of water and stick them in the coop or tractor for the chickens to use as a sort of chicken air conditioning.

My Langshans (3) are now about 3-4 weeks old and I heard a sound I'd never heard before. One of them did a chirp but it was like a rapid fire dozen or more chirps in one which sounded freaky when I heard it I was stunned by the sound and wondered which one did this. Is this common for a young rooster maybe to start making this multi-chirping like this?

I haven't heard anything like that coming from my hen house. If it happens routinely try to catch it on a video clip with your camera or smart phone. We could all enjoy a freaky chicken sound bite, especially with Halloween just around the corner. That cockerel is probably just trying to get in your head. You know its all about dominance with them.

My 26 week old rooster does that. When he does it, he is telling his "women" that he has found a food source! If I throw scratch, he stands back and does the rapid chirping and all the hens come running. Kind-of nice of him. Too bad he jumped my pug yesterday for no reason. Am posting him on CL today. I can't have a rooster I can't trust. Too many visitors with kids around!

So came across something you all might appreciate. I knew Australorps were derived from Orpingtons but what I did not know but had suspicions was that Orpingtons were derived from a short legged mutation of the Langshan parent breed. My first suspicion was when I noticed the Australorps and Langshans both had pink between their toes on their feet and looked remarkably similar. So similar that when the Langshans arrived my one Australorp Hen immediately claimed them as her babies and protected and looked after them.

Source of chicken trivia was from here..
