Langshan Thread!!!

Thank you!! I'm loving this forum. It's nice to know I'm not the only chicken lover out there:) I'm very excited to learn about the different breeds and how best to take care of them. My husband has built me a lovely coop and covered run big enough for me to join them inside. I'm really enjoying this wonderful new hobby and can't wait to cook my first fresh eggs. I'm thinking I might use the first ones to bake a lovely rum cake recipe I have that takes 4 large eggs. It seems that would be a fitting tribute to my girls;)

Welcome to the forums. Bantams? Did the TS people actually say they were bantams? Don't believe ours has ever posted any bantams; lots of ducks and leghorns. I prefer Large Foul anyway because Bantams will top out at only 2-3 pounds and provide only small eggs (someone correct me if I am wrong - never owned bantams but read about them). Still I love my three black Langshans. Big sturdy birds with a lot of character.

Ah yeah, I see their fluffy feet, it was the body shape and the white on some of their throats that made me think Australorp. The Langshans I am familiar with were always much more rounded in all ways, no hard straight lines like Aus.Orps, but there's a lot of difference in breed averages between countries.

If you want a gender review we'd need pics of the crest/face areas of each bird.

Best wishes.

I will try to get better Pics of my Langshan Once they are fully grown they will be a Upright Chickens or Roo if I have a Roo. Langshan are known to be A large Bird from What I have read about the breed. The Roo are spouse to be Gentle for being a big bird. My Langshan greet me when I feed them and check me out they have let me pet them. I will get more picture of my Langshan Chicks. No the Ausadrop is more of a rounder Chicken they black too but they look differe from my Langshan.

These definitely look more like the Langshans I know, not like Aus.Orps, but definitely more rounded than any Aus.Orps I've ever seen. Australorps aren't normally 'rounded' birds though.

The Langshans I'm familiar with look rounded at a very young age onwards, they don't go from Aus.Orp body type to Langshan body type in adulthood. But many hatcheries sell 'purebreds' which often don't resemble the breed standard too closely so maybe that's what's going on.

Judging by all the Australorps I've ever seen, of any color, they're not as rounded as Langshans.

I'm not a breed expert, though but there are probably some here who could set the record straight either way.

Anyway, best wishes with them.

If you look on my chicks feet they have feathers on their feet and the austadoprs don't get feathers on their feet. So I am going to Stick with that my are Langshan they are a stately bird and the Austdorpa are round where the Langshan are upright in shape. I love my chicks they are beautiful.

Yes, I see the feathers on their feet, I'm just saying that the presence of feathers on the feet doesn't mean their whole body is going to change to match the expected shape typical for the breed if they lack it already.

If they're growing in a different shape than what is normal for the breed, it's unlikely that they will end up the correct breed shape after puberty. I don't know of a single breed that develops into its proper shape only as an adult, they show it from a young age onwards.

But it's common enough to get purebred birds from hatcheries that will never meet the breed standard, but which nonetheless are from that breed.

Interestingly enough, some of the 'Australorps' I see on this site are basically Langshans. Even the thread about breeding Australorps to SOP shows birds basically identical to Langshans, minus leg feathers, lol! Which only goes to show that what passes for purebred in any given country may not look like the purebreds in any other country.

I live in the country Australorps originated from and what we call an Australorp here does not look like a Langshan at all. Here, purebred Australorps are not 'round' birds at all. They look more like the bids you see via this link:
Quote: Here's an image which shows the body type I am referring to --- more like proper Australorp type, which without the foot feathers I would have thought your chicks are. I hope this clears up the confusion.

Best wishes.
