Langshan Thread!!!

Posting some pics of the chicks from my November hatch. These are the ones I posted before, but no idea if in the same order. Let me know what you guys think, also guesses on pullet/cockerel, etc. Please forgive the filthiness of them right now. It is messy around here right now. Thanks!
This is a bantam:

Can I admit here that since having seen Langshans in person at the Congress I am in love all over again and don't give a snit about egg color. SO is going to kill me if I get more chickens, or another breed anyway. I am supposed to be focusing right now. ... Right.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once you see a Langshan in real life...there's nothing else.

Welcome to the fold dear!

msladyhawke, lemme get some things on here and I'll give you a quick rundown on what I think. Were these from my eggs or the ones that were mailed to you from the south?

This one...I'm not convinced it's a male. For one, bantams get red in the face FAST. I have males trying to breed at 3 months now. If it is a male, hold onto him. I believe it may be a little pullet. Things I'd like to see better on this bird: The wing carriage is a little loose. I want to see all the feathers come together to a point along the body. Loving the length of leg on her. Her color is a little light, but bred to a dark male or black male (or female if a boy), then you should get some better laced birds.

Pullet. Of course, I like my Langshans on the darker side. She has ok leg feathering. Does she show any feathers on her middle toes? I am not a fan of her head. It looks a bit small in width.

I wouldn't kick her out of my coop just yet! :D

LF #2:
I like this pullet better. St's still very dark. maybe a bit "too" dark. I like her head better than the first pullet. She looks to have a nice, dark eye. Good leg length, I like her leg feathering better than Pullet 1.

LF #3:

This little cockerel...LOL! Is he the only one you had hatch? I hate you with your pullet to cockerel odds! I like his coloring. Paired with those girls...will be a very nice match up. Nice leg feathering, he's a bit too young to critique too hard. You'll be amazed at how much he changes. Don't worry...you will see him and think "Eww..." and all of a sudden he looks amazing. From the third photo, he appears to have a nice, wide head.

LF #4:
This is my favorite pullet. I like her coloring, she is showing fairly good lacing, has nice leg feathering, her head is a bit narrow, but still wider than Pullet 1. Her tail is already coming up, but it is not too upright. It should finish at a nice angle. She is showing a good U shape already.

Thank you so much thorleif! I am enjoying it immensely! Especially when he describes "the side-hangers" and is referring to the saddle feathers and sickle feathers! HAHA! Awesome!

Mikaela, I assume you have the Standard. This is copied and pasted from the American Standard of ca. 1900. Does it appear to have changed much?

"Deaf Ear and Wattles.—Brilliant red, fine in quality, and medium size.
Neck.—Sufficiently large to give a symmetrical appearance to and
harmonize well with the other proportions of the body.
Wings.—Somewhat low in the carriage, large, and having very brilliant
coverts.
Tighs and Legs.—Somewhat short, yet large and full, covered with
long, rather close-fitting feathers.
Shanks.—Medium, with the scales of a dark-slate color showing
between the skin under the scales of a light vivid pink, wide apart, a few
feathers running down outside the legs and the centers of the outer toes on
each foot.
Feet.—The toes should be long and straight, small of bone, and, like
the shanks, a dark-slate color, with the skin between the toes and scales
a light vivid pink. (This vivid pink should be described rather as a quality
than a color, it being the evidence of a thin skin.) Toe-nails white, the
under part of the foot light-pinkish white ; in young birds, the part described
as vivid pink should be white.
Plumage.—Dense black throughout, with brilliant beetle-green gloss
upon it. Purple or blue tinge should disqualify, as should white feathers
in adult fowls ; * the closer the plumage is, the better.
Size of Hen.—Not less than seven pounds when fully grown.
Carriage and Shape.—Gracefully rounded outline ; general appearance
that of an active, intelligent bird.
Plumage.— Same as cock.
Comb.—Red, single, medium size, erect, fine in quality and evenly."
