Langshan Thread!!!

I live in Pilot Hill about 2 hours from San Francisco. I'll bet you haven't heard of it. Population 415. It's an old Pony Express Route Stop but we have Postal Service now.
I've ordered 16+ hatching eggs, if I get a good hatch I would be happy to share. I like to keep these projects small 6-10 birds due to limited space. The first batch will be set this weekend, and the second within a couple weeks. Of course I can't predict the quality of the birds but I have high hopes for one of the lines, and I think the other will be better than average.

Exciting! Did you order eggs from both 110 and 269? Did you find out where they got their stock from? The people from S CA said that they won a pair at last year's show and they were the beginning of their breeding stock. But they didn't know who donated them or what blood lines they were from. That made me hesitate about buying one of the birds. I guess that it shouldn't have but I like to keep track of where my birds are from.
 
I didn't order from the show exhibitors. I'm getting some from a breeder that doesn't put his name out there but is showing and having success. I can probably find out where he got his start. Thats the line I'm thinking is going to be a really good one. I also ordered some eggs from Padgett Poultry. I don't think they show Langshans but have been heavily involved in the poultry fancy for years as an exhibitor and judge. I'm thinking he knows good stock and has access. Would be shocked if they're not fairly good. I was surprised to find out the breeder I got my cockerel from said some of his early birds were from Murray McMurray. Forty years later they look good to me. I don't have 40 years left so I need a head start.
 
I took a few sorry pics of three of the top Langshans at the Stockton show. I wish that I had taken a pic of their cards but I was operating on less than 50% capacity that day.

The cockerel in the first 2 pics got BB and BV, I think. We went back to look at them 3 times because he was just chilling and sitting down the first 2 times. The pullet was the top placing pullet and the other cockerel was first place. The first cockerel and the pullet belonged to the breeder from AZ that Dirt bought his cockerel from. The first place cockerel belonged to A & T's Feathered Friends from Southern CA. Hopefully, I have that right. I scratched down some notes that day but I'm not sure where they went.














 
I have the breeder list here so I could come away with info for myself and others regarding who to get what from. I am lucky I live where I do regarding poultry. I just have to convince SO first. Unfortuneately, Thor's video would not convince SO but get him running the other way. Anything going at his face... or anything that poops really, not on his list of "let's get some" but more on the "don't turn your back to it." When as big as a Langshan... I might have a slim chance of sneaking these in. :)
 
That may explain some of the praise piled on in the article for its meat bird quality. I had to laugh when he indicated eating Plymouth Rock could lead to vomiting due to its fat skin. Nevermind that the Rock went on to be be half of the formula for the chicken industry. Guess he called that wrong.

LOL! Yep, he was a little biased! Langshans do have excellent tasting meat, though!

I recently did a taste comparison between a Langshan cockerel and a Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock cockerel. Both were delicious but I preferred the Langshan. I am planning on breeding both so I think that I was only a little biased! Now that I think about it, the SPPR did have more yellow fat under his skin which is kind of gross. He was only 1 week older than the Langshan.
 
The Langshan grows so much slower, that is a pity. But you can actuslly roast and eat a 6 year old Langshan-hen. ANY other breed will be very tough to eat at that age.
