Langshan Thread!!!

The Langshan grows so much slower, that is a pity. But you can actuslly roast and eat a 6 year old Langshan-hen. ANY other breed will be very tough to eat at that age.
That's a very good point. I'm sure the rate of growth was the biggest issue for the commercial industry, not flavor. I haven't eaten Langshan chicken, and at $50 my guy is safe.

I have read that about Langshans here on BYC before. I was just wondering... have you personally tried eating a 6 yr old Langshan hen?

Yes I have. My idea is for nothing to go to waste, so when my laying hens come towards the end of production they go in the freezer. And the taste/texture is top quality.

Oh, boy. I hope you are O.K. with having the guilt of starting my latest chicken addiction on your conscious, because now I gotta get some Langshan!! I REALLLY love the splash, but all of the colors are nice...

My main goal for my hens is eggs, though. Do any of you have Langshans that you have bred focusing on egg ability or think are better layers than the average Langshan, or are they all about the same...???

I'm so excited! I met with my friend who lives on 10 acres and we are definitely going to be breeding Langshans this year! YEAH!!! Her family preferred the taste of the Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock cockerels over the Langshans but we are going to breed both. We are going to be working on the breeding pens and also a paddock system for the total flock when we don't have them in breeding pens. I took the last 3 boys out to the farm yesterday so she has all the boys right now and I have the girls. I took some time to look at the boys that have been free ranging the farm. It is amazing to see how they have developed! Some of them that I would have not kept for breeding 2 months ago and matured into nice looking birds. None of them have the wonderful tail spread that I saw on the winning Langshans at the Stockton show so we have a long way to go. I may need to see if I can get some hatching eggs from the breeder in AZ!

You won't be setting any records of egg-laying with these birds. I will say, they are the BEST winter layers I have ever seen. They lay much longer. If you get a bird from a hatchery I am sure they won't be any different in laying abilities than any other breed. The only time I don't get eggs from my birds is when they are molting and when it is 110* outside.

Thanks for the honest reply. I have some "Project??? (IDK if you can call it a project, I'm just playing around

)" birds that I'm just starting, and I think I would like to
at least incorporate some Langshan blood into those lines (Via a splash rooster

I can't wait.

Splash is an awesome color! I am hoping for quite a few this next year...if everything goes according to plan!

I took some photos today of my birds...horrible photos but still show a nice shape and a good idea as to what my birds are going to be looking like this coming year. Really hoping to show some of them in some shows later on and bring back some Langshans to Oklahoma!

By the way...the last week in February I am MOVING!!!!!

Hello,

I am new to hen keeping. At this point, I am interested in keeping them as pets and for eggs. I imagine as I have more time down the road I'll posibly be interested in the other aspects such as hatching, showing, etc.

Currently, I am looking for a chick/pullet/hen that will be kept as a pet and for eggs. I think they are gorgeous and I would like a plum brown egg color. I haven't been able to find a place to purchase a Croad Langshan in the US. Can someone help me? Thanks!
