Lap training

There have been some posts lately asking how to get your chicks to like you. I think there are lots of ways to accomplish this, but lap training is one of the best.

Every evening after dinner, I select a chick and bring her into the other room for lap training and one-on-one time. They almost all adore the individual attention, love to be cuddled, love to snuggle into my lap or crook of my arm and fall asleep.

Poop? Not if you don't let them get too excited and start hopping around.

Awww! Is that a baby australorp? We have about 15 of those little guys running around out back right now! We hold and treat ours a lot. If you grab the big red feed scoop we have, they all come running and will follow you, and get under foot! I just lovem' to pieces!

Of course I have BYC on the laptop! I visit every night!

The chick is Morgan and she's a four week old Black Cochin.

I crawl into the run portion of my chicken tractor with a little footstool to sit on. I have 8 pullets, about 2 months old. I started this soon after I moved them outside at about 3 weeks of age. At first I had to pick them up and calm them, and they'd still want down right away. Now, the Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks fly up for some lap time, the Buffs like to nap on my legs and arms, and the more skittery Welsummers and Jersey Giants are beginning to like the handling as well. Today the Giant I call PBJ (for Panic Button Jersey, she has been so hard to get hold of!) flew up to sit with her sister. Such fun! It is my reward time at the end of the afternoon, before I fix dinner.

Yes, I'm all for lap training!

I got my three Brahmas as six week olds, and the person who'd been raising them would crawl into the run and lie on the ground, letting the chicks climb all over her. So by the time I got the three, they were VERY people friendly. They are now two years old, and they still, all three huge girls, crowd into my lap at once for lap time cuddling. Let me testify that there's nothing like a lap full of humongous Brahmas! And at 110, my lap isn't all that big! LOL!
