OMG you had your hands full today. Sorry on the loss of your duckling.

Maybe the pups will learn easily.... catching them is always the hardest since pups assume that means playtime. DD has a hard time catching her 6 month old boxer because he thinks her chasing and yelling means play!

Yes I did...mine are about 4 mos. And they are smart...so hopefully they will get it. My older 2 kids have the remaining ducklings out and have the puppies there too, to help with the prey drive. Seems to be working.

My eggs came in today, and I'll be setting 16 - 8 Wheaten Ameraucanas and 8 Silver Ameraucanas! I am so excited!

My DH asked me today if they have a support group on here for concerned spouses....

When I first got my dog, I witnessed her killing a baby groundhog. I won't go into details, but I was very frustrated and upset, and I was not, of course, personally attached to the groundhog as I would be to one of the chicks. She's hurt a few things since, but we trained her by having my DH sit and hold a little creature while I sat with Talli and made her simply sit with the creature. We did this so many times and for long enough durations that she just laid down bored eventually. We've used the word "careful" (said gently with a low voice) to cue her to act that way with children, the new chicks, etc. I don't know if that would work for another dog or breed, but I hope you find a way for your chicks and puppies to get along.

There are many places to buy eggs. Shipping conditions are probably the biggest factor in egg viability, but people say you can generally expect a 50% hatch rate from shipped eggs. Still, I have seen on BYC where people have had a 100% hatch all the way to a 0% hatch. I have only hatched once so far, and I am sure that more experienced folks will respond to you as well, but for my first batch of eggs I ordered from Gabbard Farms. The eggs arrived intact, and my chicks are healthy. 52% of my eggs hatched, but I was also inexperienced. After being on BYC for a while, I decided that it would be best to purchase eggs from other BYC members either through the auction or by PMing someone to ask if they would be willing to sell some of their eggs. Most people here keep just a few breeds and put a lot of care into their flocks, so you can be pretty sure that the birds are treated well and of good quality. Also, you can communicate with the seller through PMs, and if you buy through an auction, you can read and leave feedback. So, the BYC auction would be my recommendation. Best of luck!

Ooh, I didn't even know there was a hatch-a-long! I set mine on the 3rd. I guess I'll go fill out the form.

Doing an all-banties hatch this time. Got some bantam EEs, some various purebred silkies, various d'uccles, and a bounty of "sebright surprise" eggs from Linda's yard (her sebright hens really, really get around the barnyard...).
