Yep, that's me, the Nervous Novice! Thanks, Pete, that's a crazy amount of info! I will definitely read every last word! My son really wants a couple chickens of his own! We've tried twice to hatch, with no results! We really want to get to the pip and zip stage this time! My son is Luke Sky Walker (yes, it really is! explains the youndjedi, eh?) and he said he will "use the force" this time around and I should stop being so nervous! Words of wisdom from a 9 year old. I would expect nothing less from the young Jedi!!!

Great pic of the turkeys!

My DH just doesn't understand chicken math

....He found out about the broody sitting on eggs. I did say I wasn't going to hatch anymore till fall....I didn't say anthing about letting a broody do the work. Besides, I don't have too many chickens because I don't count them as chickens until they crow or lay an egg

Of course the 50+ chicks running around don't count....nor do the 17 eggs under the broody (She's doing a good job so far

) But at least DH, didn't get too upset...he is after all in the process of doubling the size of the chicken run

Do you want the good news or bad news? Ok good news...I found out why my incubator had cold and hot spots. The back edge was hanging about an inch off my dresser, the corner edge was about inches off the dresser. Who would have known??? Now we all do! The bad news...after I moved it the temp spiked to 108 and the egg internal temp was 104.8.

The other good news? Well my dog was fine with the ducks who lived behind my old place, but kinda waas tooooo interested in my chickens. So I never let her out around them. Last week my daughter let her out with the chickens and I ran out to see my dog pawing one of the chicks vigorously. I knew she probably wouldn't try to eat it...at least initially but she would be too rough. Well I screamed at my dog and chased her around because I was so upset. Well, back to the good news...today my daughter let her out and she just laid down and ignored the chickens!! Woot!!!

Pastrymama and I made it Tuesday---it's filled with biologically incorrect Peeps.

WOW.. that is a roller coaster of emotion! I will say HOORAY about the dog!! I have two big dogs and haven't been able to let them out with the chickens. I have 6 8-week old babies in the back yard. When they were about 3 weeks old or so I tried to introduce them one at a time. The first, youngest dog.. licked and sniffed vigorously.. I was surprised actually.. He's the one I figured would want a chicken snack.

The older dog who is so docile and easy going was the one who tried to snap one up in his jaws of death.. Needless to say, I haven't given them an opportunity to get together since. NOT until the chickens are bigger and at least able to peck the heck out of one that gets too excited. We will see..
