Large Brown Cochins

Haven't posted any pictures nor have I shown them yet. The females are close to standard but the males are still a work in progress. The males either come with too little color (crow winged) or they come with too much color, ie; if they have the brown wing bay they have brown breasts. I am going to try double mating this spring to see if I can get a male and a female line established. How are your cochins doing? We had a nice showing of cochins at the Shawnee show this past weekend, a large black hen was champion asiatic. We will host the ABA National in 2023 and have placed a bid for the 2024 APA National, hope you get to come down. I may be going to the APA 150th Anniversary National in Columbus, OH next year, if I have some browns ready I may take them out for their first showing.
Good to hear from you Bob and thanks for the kind words about the thread.

Blessings,

Bo

Hi Bo - I am working still with the Cochin large fowl and Bantams in several color varieties, as well as a large fowl Cochin color genetics program working with Brown and Wheaten color families. I find your observations interesting as the Brown Cochin, like the Dark Brown Leghorn, should be a male exhibition color (though both sexes should be showable from the same mating) and in my research I have not been able to find any photos of the Brown Cochin males from Alex Duffy. The last large fowl Browns I saw were at a show in Eugene, Oregon circa 1990, give or take a couple of years, shown by judge Ron McKown of Idaho. Since Ron passed I have not seen another.

It has been some years since I have been to a show in either Oklahoma or Ohio and I am considering attending Ohio this year to have the opportunity to visit people I haven't seen in some time. I may see you there.

All My Best, Bob

Yep, the only pictures of Duffy birds I found were of hens but they were magnificent, unfortunately in black and white only! That was my thought but it has been easier to get the color right in the females as opposed to the males. Are you working on brown and wheaten in the bantams or large.
We are planning to attend the Ohio National this coming year and our club, Oklahoma State Poultry Federation, will host the 2023 ABA National. If we see each other at either show we'll have to pull up chairs in the cochin isle and have a good ol' fashioned cochin visit!

Best wishes for a blessed New Year!

Hi Bo - I am working with the Brown and Wheaten families in large fowl. I do hope to catch up with you at one of the shows! Bob

The ABA national is at the Oklahoma State Poultry Federation in Shawnee, OK this year and we have just been awarded the APA National for 2024, hope you are able to attend one of those. Hope to have a good showing of Brown's for the APA National.

Blessings,

Bo
