About a week and a half ago I noticed my 9 week old Easter Egger pullet was holding her tail off to the side. I checked her and felt a large probably 2 and 1/2 inch in diameter mass (ball) on her rear to the right of her vent. I knew she was in no way old enough to lay so she wasn't egg bound or anything like that. I immediately took her to the vet. My vet treats birds and cares for his own cockatoos and other large birds but is in no way a specialist especially with chickens.
He drained her mass and the fluid was mostly clear with a few pieces of sediment. He looked at the fluid under the scope and found bacteria and white blood cells. He gave me antibiotics for her which she took orally for a week. Her mass did refill which he said was a possibility. I took her back in yesterday to have it drained again and so he could check on the progress of the bacteria. Her bacteria count was approx half and no white blood cells that he could see. He set her up with more antibiotics. I'm finding her mass is already refilling with fluid and I'm doing my best to keep it drained on my own while she sits in the garage in quarantine. She eats and drinks fine, she seems to be in no pain but we still don't know what this thing is so I'm afraid to put her out with the other girls. I've about reached my limit on how much I can spend on vet bills for her. Sending the fluids off to a lab for testing to find out the type of bacteria and stuff was estimated around $150 so I just can't justify paying that much when every time I go to have her drained and get more medication it's over $100 and we haven't had her long enough to grow super attached.
We decided if by the end of this round of antibiotics if the bump is still refilling we will have her put down. She's a pet and I wouldn't cull her myself so I'll have the vet do it. If anyone has had something like this in their bird and could tell me if they recovered over time that would be helpful. I just can't have her in the garage forever and without knowing the type of bacteria she had I'm afraid to put her out with the other girls even though she seems totally fine in every other way. Thanks for any help you can give.
