Hey friends! Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Would love some advice!

Two mornings ago, I released my flock from their coop & found that my largest Pekin was unable to walk. She hobbled out of her enclosure & has only hobbled since. She’s doing a sort of very shaky wing-walk when she does move, & when she’s unmoving, her legs are curled up under her (not stretched out behind).

She’s getting lots of water time, & her feet/legs seem to work just fine to move around while swimming. No noticeable warmth of swelling in her feet or joints. She has one small irritated spot on one of her feet (not full-fledged bumble foot, but maybe the start), which I treated by cleaning & Blue-Kote just a few days ago. She is eating, drinking, & pooping (though not as much since she’s not very mobile).

She feels a little twitchy in my arms as I carry her around, & the shuddering wing-walk is tough to watch. She’s currently in my bathtub preening very actively.

I’ve checked for egg binding; can’t feel a thing when I get up in there.

I have given her the recommended Durvant B complex over food/treats twice, to help address any kind of niacin emergency. She doesn’t love it, but she’s consumed some. Typically, my flock of 15 eat layer feed supplemented by everyday foraging in my very large yard. They also get occasionally veggies/treats/etc. No poisonous plants in my yard that I know of, & no other related difficulties in my flock.

Thanks for your insight! Couple of pics attached from this morning’s soak.

:welcome How old is she? You say you gave her B complex 2X it may take more than that to see improvement so definitely keep that up. Are you giving her 1ml daily that is the dose. Also water therapy is so good for them it takes the pressure off their legs and back and helps to keep the muscles from getting weaker. Just make sure to put her in and out so she isn't jumping. I would also keep her where she can still see everyone but isn't trying to keep up, resting and nutritional support is best if a niacin def or injury. You can also give the B complex by mouth we have info https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...dications-to-all-poultry-and-waterfowl.73335/

By layer feed, do you mean a chicken feed or a duck specific feed? It's very important for ducks to be on some sort of waterfowl feed, especially Pekins. They need the extra vitamins and nicain as they were originally a meat breed and grow very fast. They often have leg issues specific to the breed.

Best of luck to you & I hope she recovers soon!

Y’all are so helpful- thank you!! She’s a couple months over a year old, & hasn’t had issues up to this point. Since none of my other ducks (the other pekin included) aren’t having issues, I’m thinking it might be an injury, as opposed to a deficiency.

During her adult life, she’s eaten a combo of all-flock crumbles/duck pellets/layer feed, with some variation as I’ve dialed in/added new members to the flock/etc. I don’t think she’s got a calcium deficiency; my girls have always free-ranged quite a bit, & their eggshells have always been VERY hardy!

Appreciate the link to the oral injection tutorial, I may go that route tonight. I’ll see if I can get a video, as well! I’ve had her soaking for a good part of the day, & she’s got plenty of spunk- gave me a good nip this morning while in my bathtub, & she’s managing to move around a good bit in spite of her trouble.
