Large scabs on comb and one wattle - help?

UPDATE: "Sweets" does not have pox!

This is Day 4 of his being in my kitchen, in a large dog crate. When I let him wander, he finds me - is currently sitting in my lap in my computer room.

I have treated his scabs with petroleum jelly to soften and Eqyss Micro-Tek gel to help heal. His nostril scab came off, but the wound is deep, so still healing. I removed the wattle scab - pink underneath. His comb scab is thick and flat - nowhere near healing. I think others attacked him and tried to kill him.

I did not mention his limp in my original post, because several of my cockerels are limping from their "teenage" battles. Sweets would not put his foot down and could not get onto a roost 6" high. I checked carefully for anything broken - nope. While checking (and now I feel stupid), I saw that part of one toe is missing. After soaking and bandaging (that lasted about an hour!), it is less swollen.

I am hopeful of a full recovery.

sounds like he IS on the road to recovery.. that is good news.. i lost my lap chicken a month ago, to a dog attack.. and she looked just like your handsome boy.. hugs to your both..

Thanks, Twilightgecko (absolutely LOVE your profile name!). Sweets is still not eating and drinking like I want him to. I took him to my vet for a bag of saline, sub-cutaneous. It really helped bring along a hen of mine, five years ago, who was dragged away by a cat. I am sorry about your loss to a dog. My four dogs learned not to bother the chicks at just a few days old, and they pretty much ignore them - not so for visiting dogs!

it was a neighbours dog.. and that said neighbour is the town vet.. ergh.. but i hope your baby is doing better each day.. he's got to, with all the tlc he's getting..

So sorry about your chicken, and doubly disappointing a vet would not have better control of their dog!

I would be concerned about lameness in young cockerels. In my experience the most likely cause of lameness in adolescent chickens is Marek's disease, especially when you have more than one exhibiting lameness at the same time. The lesions on your boys face could also be down to Marek's. I'm not saying it definitely is, but just something for you to be aware of.
