We were talking about this in posts 6 through 10. Yes, it could be that, but it's hard to know for sure. Good link though.

I have had a few hens with Ascites but never to that degree. That is massive. I hope you can drain it and at least give her some relief that has to be hard to carry around.

I'm going to try to drain it tonight but what will that do to her if it's a hernia and I jab her intestines?

Well you need to know where to put the needle so you don't hit anything else. I'd also try some of those natural remedies that are mentioned in the link Soon2be put up. If after draining there is fluid.

If that happens she will get an infection and die. Please do not try to drain her unless you are 100% sure that the swelling is just fluid.

That is how I knew my hen had ascites I could feel the fluid.

The ones I has drained felt like water balloons. Last one I necropsied that had that had a large belly had a tumor that was causing all of her organs to move down into the abdominal cavity, including her liver and intestines. She had a squishy belly with some fluid, but if I had tried to drain her I would have poked her liver or intestines.
