large worm in 10 day old chick poo

Hi, we have 7 baby chicks that we got 10 days ago from a mail order hatchery. This afternoon my husband discovered a poo with what looks like a smooth round worm in it. The worm is about the diameter of a piece of cooked spaghetti and about 1/2" long. This seems really big for a little 10-12 day old chick.

Everything I've read on this forum indicates that chicks that young don't usually get worms, especially not bad enough so that you see them. They have never been outside or exposed to any soil. We have them in a large cardboard box with pine shavings in the bottom. All the advice about using de-wormers seems to recommend waiting until they're 4 months old. What should I do?

I am bumping you up since this seems like such an odd thing and am wondering what to do with one that young. I'd guess go to the feedstore and read on the wazine bottle what type of worms it gets and how to dose so young. It sounds like a round worm, but unsure from description. I would hesitate to use ivermectin or ivomec on one that young.

I got on drugs.com for vet meds and the lowest dose it gave on there was 1 fluid oz per gallon of water for 4-6 week olds for treatment of rounds and nodular worms. You'd need to do a pretty tiny dose for ones that young, but if it is worms it needs to be taken care of. That is so odd. I'd call the hatchery, too.

it's rare, but not unheard of..

I think I'd try Wazine 17..might be safer.

Wazine is piperazine and treats adult round worms only.(which is what it sounds like)
retreat in 10 days.

Thank you all for your responses. I'll go to the feed store tomorrow (not open Sunday) and get some Wazine. I'll ask them there if they have any advice, otherwise I'll just try a small dose. Or maybe the bottle will have a customer service number I can call.

Olive leaf extract will kill parasites, viruses, and malignant microbes in humans. May work for chickens in very small doses.

The youngest that I have wormed anything with ivomec is 8 weeks old, never had a reason to do it prior to that.
