Good morning all,

it seems that my chicks are all pecking the largest chick and drew blood. This is my first time dealing with a lot of these things. As you can see they drew blood. What do I do? Am I supposed to separate the chick?

That looks pretty serious. I agree with chickenlittle21. I did have the same problem with one of my orpingtons when she was losing feathers and I put a little blue food color on it and they never bothered the area again however it wasn't near as serious as your chick. It seems to happen more with lighter colored chicks.

Is there any particular reason they do??

If I am understanding your question, sometimes when chick/chickens molt the feathers that comes out has a drop of blood where it came out and if it noticed by another chick/chicken they will peck at it because they are attracted to red. Red is more noticeable on lighter colored chicks than dark colored chicks.

How do I reintegrate ?

It'd be best if you can place her in a dog crate that's in with the others so you don't have to reintegrate. She'll be safe so they can't peck at her, but she'll remain part of the flock. The dog crates wired walls will serve as a barrier to protect her from them but let her remain with the Flock.

okay that makes sense, I was wondering why the lighter colors are more susceptible!

okay I will move the crate into the coop! I have her separated and hanging with the fam, good thing it’s only been good day and I have this fantastic forum as a resource!
