Larvae

I went to a store in a neighboring city that specializes in farm animal feed and other products. Knowing how much my girls love the meal worms I purchased a bag of crickets and soldier fly larvae- I didn't even check the prices, I was just shopping like the idiot I am. Anyhoo, I get home with my bundle of treats and head out to the pen. The girls gathered around because (I'm trained) and I opened the bag of soldier fly larvae-phew" stinky....my "top" hen, looked at it for a bit, poked it and then swiftly walked away and then came back impatiently awaiting for me to open the other bag of "crickets" that she semi had an interest in. After that none of the hens wanted anything to do with the .....$19... soldier fly larvae... I subsequently put them out for the woodland birds who also tip toed around it. Thankfully, they liked the other mix I bought them. Lesson learned! :O)

Hmm, well mine like them, both chicks and hens. Mine probably like them about the same as mealworms. Every flock has their snack preferences!

that's good to hear, I guess it's just trial and error.

Maybe product quality needs to be considered at time of feeding? My birds representing multiple breeds and multiple life-stages hammer live insects as a general rule.
