I was cleaning out the coop this morning and found this in their bedding (under the roosting bars, not in the nesting box). I couldn’t tell you who laid it, but I have two hens who are about 1.5 years old that haven’t laid in months. One hen that’s a little under a year who is a regular layer.

The older hens have been treated for an infection in the past and pulled through well but never resumed laying. All behavior in the coop seems normal. They did integrate with the younger one a couple of weeks ago, but other than a little chasing on the first day they’ve been melding well.

Seeing no other symptoms, should I assume this is a lash egg? Maybe from the ones who stopped laying? Every once in a while they lay a shell-less egg so that’s my best guess.

I finished cleaning the coop and came here to see what y’all would do upon finding this. Please advise!

If you can cut open the pinkish blob and it looks like rings of a tree then most certainly lash material. You can try treating it but the hen is pretty much done laying from now on and the infection has a good chance of coming back.

I had a young dark brahma develop salpingitis which is the infection that causes lash material to build up in their reproductive tract. I wasn’t sure what her problem was as at first but she went though a couple bouts of being lethargic with a dirty bum. This was my fluffiest, prettiest, more docile girl and I kept her going for a handful of months and hoped she’d pull through. Only when I saw lash material in her droppings did I call it quits and culled her along with some cockerels I hatched out. At this point she had stopped laying for about 4 months, she was only about 1yr and 3ish months old and maybe laid a total of 30 eggs in her life. I pulled this huge lash material blockage out of her reproductive tract. No wonder she wasn’t feeling well, poor girl.

Luckily I was able to hatch 2 of her eggs before she stopped laying so I still have a part of her in my flock. I’m getting a couple more dark Brahmas next year as I love their pattern.

Sorry to hear about your girls, I would figure out who exactly it was from and either try treating her or cull her. Do some searching for treatment options, I’m not too sure what the preferred treatment is other than antibiotics of some kind.
