Paper towels can be slick for them, depending on the brand. I usually use puppy pee pads, but they can be a little slick too. An old towel or rag is good if you have one to spare. (I bought a pack of dollar wash cloths, I use and wash and rotate)
The boots should work. They grow so fast, so check it fairly often, maybe every 6-8 hours, leave it off for an hour or so, then replace if necessary.

And most importantly, post some pics!!!

Use masking tape next time
Try cutting alongside each toe, as close as possible without cutting the skin, and maybe tweezers to separate it from itself. Might have to cut it off in pieces.
Depending on the kind, you might be able to wet it with water and get it to separate.

WOw i thought about masking tape but did not know i could use it.... so much easier than holding a piece of cardboard while attempting to wrap with a bandaid. THank you so much
