I have a chicken that is not doing well. She is pale, keeps her eyes closed, and sleeps most of the time. She doesn't free range with the other chickens, just stays in the coop. I have seen her eat and drink a bit. She has also gone in the nesting box to lay an egg.

My vet does not see chickens.

I have separated her and given her yogurt but it didn't do any good.

I am going to buy medicated chick feed for her and give her molasses in her water (I will put her back in the cage for this).

Is there anything else I can do for her? I don't want her to suffer- if she doesn't get better in a couple days I am going to put her down.

Thanks for any replies.

Does she take food and water for you now? I would try some duramayacin and maybe some vitamins/electrolites in her water to see if that makes a difference. I am grasping at straws here.

Good luck to you!

how old is the chicken? could it have eaten anything poisonous? has it been left out in the cold? maybe it has a fever? feel her crop to if it feels unusual. have the other chickens pecked on her any?

thanks for the fast replies- much appreciated.

She is a year and a 1/2. Nobody else (knock on wood) is sick. The weather isn't too cold now, lows in the 40s. Nobody is picking on her yet.

I am going to google duramayacin.

thanks again- any other thoughts?

If she will still drink, try adding some Quick Chick or some other electrolyte/vitamin formula to her water. Try getting a fair amount of it in her with a dropper if she will let you. A sick chicken will usually go one way or the other pretty quickly. She could pop back anytime...or not. As long as she does not appear to be in pain or unduly suffering, it is worth trying a few fixes before considering culling her.

I don't think I would give her medicated chick feed, but I will defer to the experts among us for advice on that point.

Good luck and be sure to post the outcome.

your feed store may have it or try the hatcheries, they care meds too. That is all I know, maybe someone else would know more!

check her skin and bases of feathers for lice- they can cause anemia and weakness- treat her if you see them, consider deworming her instead of antibiotics (duramycin is an antibiotic)- I do not see anything in your description that sounds like a bacterial infection, feel her crop first thing in the morning and see if it still has material in it. It should be empty in the morning. If it is full of material in the morning- look up impacted crop. Find a local vet who sees chickens, if your regular one does not (if you want to have that option open for this chicken, or any one in the future). Call around.
