not necessarily. My mini-doxie killed repeatedly and every chance she got. I used a few of her victims on her- and even tied a dead chicken to her collar.
She could fit through the tiniest openings and managed to kill nineteen chicks within seconds- as long as it heard me to hear the chaos occuring and run to the back of the house. She killed my silkie and her babies as well by going through the pop-hole of the chicken coop. I decided I had cried enough tears, and rehomed her. I couldnt keep my ducks and chickens secure enough because she could fit thru anywhere. Her prey-drive was just too strong.

Aww, so sorry for your loss, thats terrible! Im glad though you found new friends for your little black duck, in time you will come to enjoy them too.

I am so sorry to hear this. I agree that beating the dog with the duck would not do any good. This instinct, in so many breeds, is so strong. The dog would not understand why you were doing this. Doxies were bred for hunting small prey. I have terriers and many birds and while my dogs are well trained, I do not trust them 100%. I always keep a close eye on them. Again, so sorry for your losses.

Thanks everyone!

Looks like we will be building "Fort Knox" to keep that darn dog out of the birds. He has tried to get to the chickens in the past, but we have been able to secure their pen. Hopefully we will be able to do it for the ducks once we get them outside.

The dog does have a STRONG kill drive. Once the "prey" is dead, he won't touch it. Once he caught a robin out of the air and ate it whole. He is 10 and I am hoping he doesn't have too many years left in him. He has some health problems...and once he leaves us, we will never get another dachshund.

I am new on this site, and I have always felt so welcome. Thanks for your sympathy and love!

I have 2 dog that are Lab spanial mix. They look like labs but are small like a spanial. We got hese dogs when they were 3 months old before they went to tht ekill shelter. They were fine when they were little but once they got older they would chase anything and kill anything they could catch. They live outside and are in a big yard, abot 100 by 100 and they run and play all day and are happy dogs. They have caught birds out of thin air as they flew past, squirrels have been killed, snakes. Ive found a few turtles they have chewed on round the rim and they have also had someones cat that jumped the fence. That was the last time the cat did that. They have dug under my fence to get to the ducks. Its funny, they dont bother my Pekins or Runners, they run to the fence every now and then and bark at them but in general dont bother them. When I came home with 9 Khakis my dogs went balistic, dug under the fence and also the hot wire..yes they have hot wire top, middle and bottom but got thru it to the ducks. They didnt kill the ducks because I got out here in time but that was 1 reason I had to get rid of the Khakis. My dogs are well fed, socialised with humans, they are my yard dogs yes and will bark if anyone but as soon as you speak to them the bark dissapears and the tail starts a waggin...Dogs will be dogs tho and if they have killed once they will do it again.

Please don't blame the dog. It only did what many years of breeding made it do, go after prey. Doxies are badger hounds, bred to go into the badger holes and kill them. I am appalled at the idea of beating a dog with a dead animal or tying a dead animal onto the dogs collar. Check with any trainer. Punishment should be given immediately and fairly. Not to be dragged out for a long time. Very not fair to the dog.
I am very sorry for the loss of your ducklings. How awful for you and them. I hope you heal soon and you find joy in the new ducklings that you have now.
