Last swim

I had to rehome one of my dachshounds for the very same reason. She would even taught the chicks to get them to fly and try to escape and if they did she would catch and kill them. My Lab-Newfoundland mix couldn't care less, the chickens will even come peck his tail and no response at all. He's the greatest dog ever and I go him from a shelter too.

I have a doxie mix and he is scared of my chickens well he is scared of everything. I am so lucky my first 5 dogs leave the chickens alone but my son's new dog which is a husky is not so good. We make sure that when she is out the chickens are locked up when the chickens are out she is locked up. I do hope with some training and age she will stop but she does have a strong prey drive and has a lot of energy. We will just keep working with her and until then keep them separate. Good luck with your new ducks and at least you know that your pen and coop are secure from predators this way.

I'm very sorry about your loss. I know it's very difficult to lose a beloved creature.

While I can't even imagine how you must be feeling right now, please don't be hard on your Dachshund. While I love my 4 Doxies, if I turned my back for even a second, I wouldn't trust them with the ducks. Even though 2 of them act scared to death of my ducklings, it's hardwired in them to go after other animals.

Please do take good care of your 10 year old Doxie. I know you must be very upset with him, but he is part of your family. We just sometimes forget that they are animals with specific instincts.

So sorry,
Amanda

When the dog was found killing the ducks, we removed him, told him NO, and put him outside. I don't blame the dog--he was doing what dogs do. I blame myself for underestimating his climbing ability. He slept inside with us like usual.

We will be setting up a very good fence when the duckies move outside.
