Late death in eggs

I wanted to let you all know I cracked the lid and had humidity at 70% for this last hatching. I got 7 out of 9 to hatch. That is loads better. SO I still believe my elevation is to blame. It got better with more ventilation.

Thank you for sharing that. I know they say not to help the chicks, that if they can't make it they should not make it.
But that only holds true when they are naturally incubated with a broody hen. If we are using artificial methods then the options change because we changed nature.
That is my reasoning on it anyway

Well, I sort of agree...I think that maybe a chick that had to be helped should not be used for breeding purposes.

Other than that, if they need help, why not? I might (and have) gotten another live chick than I would have if I had not helped.

I help some of mine. If I let the humidity drop too much and the membrane is too dry and the chick is stuck, that's not a genetic weakness or health issue. I dampen the membrane. If it's really gotten tough, I'll tear part of it, too. Then I let the chick do the rest. I don't peel off the shell. That way, if the chicks not quite ready, it can come out a little later. I just keep watch and see what happens. If it get it's feet tangled in membrane or something weird like that, I'll help, too.
