late eggs???

Well....as I was getting ready to leave Friday with my boys (12 and 13) the oldest one says

"Hay dad did you notice that this egg is starting to crack open?"

It had just popped open the shell and was moving a bit. Had to leave but will check back about 1pm today. (sat) (thank goodness we have 24/7 access cards).

We will see.

OH ya I tried to candle the eggs but they are brown and I saw nothing definitive.
(dang little to be honest)

Boy if we could tie the "late Hatching" of chicken eggs to global warming I bet we could get one heck of a research grant.

Well.....The praxis 2 earth science test went well.

But then I have a near PhD in geology so it had better have.

Got to love the dept of ED.

Anyhow...I have one fuzzy chick. It's kind of dopey on its feet but ALIVE. It'll peck wet starter off my finger. It seems to know where the 37.5 c mark is in the brooder.

We don't use F in my class it’s all metric

Once I give up.... I'll use the digital them. on the incubator to double check the glass ones in the bator.

Monday the fight will be "on" about what to name it.

Ok
one that hatched on friday night came from the smallest egg in the bator. He is doing (is it bad luck to real positive) fine. Two others have hatched saturday/sunday day 25. Not sure about the rest. The other bator are "set" to hatch on Wed (day 21).

Now with what has happened....

Do I remove the turner as per instru. on day 18. (tomorrow) or wait expecting a late hatch?

These are differnt egg sources and differnt bators.

One of the recent arrivals has a tissue growth between it's leggs. It is small and looks like a partical yolk. We will give this one a chance and see.

Other newbie is BIG.

Bill (happy as a clam)

1 doing well
1 dead
1 crippled bad foot

not so hot

next set to hatch on wed. Hope things go better

I take my turner out on the evening of day 18 and boost the humidity. I don't open it after that unless I absolutely have to.

It is hard to say for sure but chick deformities can often be related to the humidity during the hatch. But with your hatch being so late it could be temps and humidity. You can search google and troubleshoot your hatch problems.

good luck i know how you feel got some leg horns in at day 23 and there showing nothing at the moment

Whats the crippled foot look like? Are the toes curled, crooked? You can straighten them, I have straightened a few. Make a shoe from soft cardboard like a cereal box, flatten the foot and tape, medical tape is best but I have used duck (should be chicken) tape but its a bit too sticky.

ok

1. The bad foot chicken is a bad leg chicken the "Knee" does not bend. It is locked in place.

2. The bators have simple themo. in them which I trusted.

I put a digital themo. in and found the temp in one right on. These eggs should hatch today/tomorrow (I hope)

My still air was set at about 90 degrees f (we will see later this week)

The one I used with the first clutch was set at about 86 degrees f on the digatal but read 100 on the spirt themo that came with the set up.

I know better than to trust one measuring device....just dropped the ball.

We will reset and try again.

I know it is better to not open the bator but I had to retreive a few eggs as we went along for class work and I'm not sure a hen has a constant temperature on her eggs as she sits on them and leaves for short breaks.

live and learn./
