Late Feburary-Early March 2016 Hatch-A-Long!

So I've had 31 quail hatch so far and 23 are in the brooder, having started hatching 9 hours ago. My thermometers are all over the place, probably due to radiant heat, so I'm trying to go by chick distribution. How does this look to you?



The light is pretty much in the center of the group. They're sleeping a lot but do get up and run around like idiots at times.

Too hot, too cold, or Goldilocks?

It looks just right given they are not all piled up in one bunch.

Actually, that's a 78.95% hatch rate as you don't count eggs that are infertile when determining hatch rate. And that's a fantastic rate, especially given it was your first setting.

Oh! Well that's awesome! My husband said I was cheating when I tried to calculate rate without counting the clear egg! Ha!

I just set my 3rd hatch of the year. 90 of my Generation 2 eggs, 1 pure Black Copper Maran egg, and 5 heritage Turkey eggs (albeit I don't know which breed they are yet). See if you can spot them in the pictures below.





This hatch is going to be iffy, at best. Some of the eggs I have set were laid during the coldest spell of weather in 140 years, and may have been frozen. Egg production has also gone way down in the last 10 days...where I used to get 12-13 eggs a day I have been getting 5 or less...so to get the setting above I've had to use eggs that are up to 16 days old. Hatch date is 3/16.

I have a pip!!!!
One of the eggs also has a tiny hairline crack. Does that count as a pip or is it an almost-pip?

What do you use to mark your eggs? I use pencil, but it doesn't show up very well. I'm just worried about what's safe to use.

I use the black freezer wax pencils. Get em at the grocery store.

I used sharpie with this batch with no ill effects so far. 46 eggs set and only one quitter. I'm currently in lock down.
