Hi fellow chicken enthusiasts,
I posted for help before I did the introduction, so apologies and here goes!

We are "two broke girls" LOL who live on horse property (too small to be called a farm) in a rural area outside of Phoenix. Hot, hot, hot here - only 108 predicted today LOL!

We currently have 5 horses, 5 dogs, 8 cats, and at Eastertime acquired 6 baby chicks! You can read about "Gretl" in the twisted neck thread.. Our chickens are all girls: two Rhode Island Reds we call Scarlett and Rhett; two (we were told were Americaunas (sp?) but are colored like Wyandottes (?) We call Hansel and Gretl; one Ausralorp we call Smoky; and one Buff Orpington we call Buffy (I know! Not very original!).

I am a retired RN (MJ), who has Peruvian Horses and do limited "fun" local shows; primarily ride pleasure and competetive trail. Deb works fulltime, has Quarter Horses and does gymkhana events with them. The horses are (PHs) Angel & Annie; (QHs) Cash, Clover and Lucy.

The dogs are (Labs) Harley and Coal; (Chi x) Little Bit; (Aussie Xs) Buddy and Willow.

Kitties are all rescues ages 2 to 16; all spayed, neutered, and of course vaccinated; and indoor bcuz of coyote population, and are One-Eyed Jack, One-Eyed Jill, Patches, Precious, Little Girl, Thanks, Ing, and Tuxedo. Would like to rehome 5 or 6! Let us know if you're into kittie rescue and might like to adopt!

Have read extensively on this site and am impressed and grateful for all the wonderful information!

Our upcoming projects are to keep on keepin' on with Gretl's recovery (am ordering a chicken diaper for her!), and to build a pallet coop.

Hope this wasn't TMI!

Happy Independence. Day!

MJ

Hi QHnppcks. Sorry I can't help you out with the adoptions as we live in north Pa. , which is quite a bit east of Phoenix. Good luck with your birds kittens and other animals. Happy 4th of July

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I just read thru your thread in the emergency section. SO glad to hear the chick is doing better! Many times they don't survive such ailments and it is the constant supportive care that gets some of them thru this! You are doing great with this chick. Unfortunately, things do take time. But she has come far in this past week!

Keep up the good work with her and I hope she makes a full recovery!!!!

Enjoy all your new poultry adventures and keep us posted on Gretl!!

thanks TwoCrows and Chickenhound! When I figure out how to post pics, will share. Never knew how rewarding it would be to care for a "sick chick". Rewards are her trills, purrs, and yesterday a real "cluck"!

There is a book I read called " The homesteaders guide to raising small livestock" written in 1974 by Jerome D. Belanger. Its a great book and one thing that has stuck in my mind is " Love your animals" Truer words were never spoken. If you are going to raise animals for eggs or meat, take care of them well and they will take care of you. Good luck with the sick chick.

It is easy to upload pics here....while in this reply box, click on that little icon that looks like a scene, (2 to the left of the smile face) it says Insert Image. A window will open for you to browse your pc. Pick out the pic you wish to load here, submit it from your pc and then submit here. Very easy once you do it. :)

Welcome to BYC! This is the place to be if you own chickens. You have a nice mix of breeds. Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed as they are very hardy, calm and gentle, and excellent layers of large, brown eggs. Good luck with your flock.
