Late night snakes trying for the quail!

I'm glad you were able to take care of your problem without any of your quail getting hurt!!

A snake is a snake is a snake aroung here unless we can positively id as a non poisonous one!! I know what a king snake looks like and there are quite a few rat snakes around here that look entirely to close to a copperhead for my peace of mind!!

Just for the record guys, I'm not a guy. Not commenting on your parenting skills or protecting your animals, and of course the copperhead is understandable, it just hits a soft spot when the little harmless guys get picked off simply for being around. Also most things I state I do to everyone who could be reading and not just the original poster, as there are far too many people who kill every single one they come across. I also dont see a point for killing something just because it might ruffle some feathers and bother the birds a little.

I can guarentee you your kid is going to be in a lot more pain when he scrapes a knee or stubs a toe with more risk of infection then a bite from any North American non venomous snake. A snake that size would be lucky to even break skin. Its much more of a shock then anything.

All I'm simply trying to get at is that in many cases these guys dont need to be killed when a simple toss in the bushes would solve the problem.

Plus I have a thing for copperheads I just love how they look, I need to find someone willing to freeze and ship to me what they get so at least its not being wasted.

P.S. Remember just because I try to discourage killing snakes doesnt mean I'm a bad person, a lot of people here seem to be taking what I say way too personally and feels like theyre starting to actually dislike me. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, I just love our legless neighbors just as you all like your birds.

I kill any snakes that come around the house or where my kids are- poison or not- The six acres behind are their home and if they stay in it they are fine- I have let a few chicken snakes live that took up residences in sheds and fed on mice and such and were never agressive if you didn't bother them , but any that stray close to kids or animals are fair game - So I don't blame you at all for getting rid of them.

Following this advice, I didn't see another last night, but went out this evening to see what was out in the runs...

I didn't see another the same size or color, but to my amazement....

One shot, one kill...times two! Clean head shots again. These snakes must really like quail.

No black snakes, ( I saw one black snake and let it go back to the woods) just the piosonous ones....if you're in South East Oklahoma, folks they're out!

Thanks to everyone who supports the troops! Dawg 53, thank you for your service. I've only got 17 in...I went from an NCO to now a CWO, I've got several to go....

Disclaimer: I didn't go in the woods hunting these, only my run/coop area. No non-piosonous snakes where hurt during the extermination of these two. This is for informational purposes only, no need to post if trying to change my mind on the irradication of all poisonous snakes I see in the inhabited/cleared area of my homestead.

Man, I've heard that with all the rain we have had this year that they really were out. That's TOO many copperheads. Thanks for your service protecting us and our country, and be safe with all those dudes out and about.

bfrancis~~couldn't agree with you more!!

We've coexisted with the black snakes for the past 6 yrs and never had a problem with them~~so we never killed them. Two weeks ago, that changed. Caught a 5 footer in the barn that had already consumed several babies, and a 6 footer that was attempting to. Needless to say, they're in snake heaven now--but my babies are not in their bellies.
