I have 9 pullets, all raised from day old chicks. The oldest were born around 5/25 and the youngest around 6/30. One of the first group is laying consistently as of 12/5, and one from the other group is starting to squat and act like she may lay an egg soon. My question is, what is the latest point of lay? I realize that as my girls were “old enough” to lay the hours of daylight decreased, so I’m sure that has a lot to do with it...but I thought I would ask the experts. When will they lay? Spring? The first three from the 5/25 hatch are a barred rock (the layer), a cuckoo marans, and an Easter Egger. They’re all friendly, and I’ve seen the barred rock laying, but the other two do not squat.
Of the younger group one barred rock has started to squat this week, and her cell mate from the tractor store definitely doesn’t. They were sold as blue eggers but are definitely barred rock.
The four ladies that fall somewhere in the middle in age are three olive eggers and an Easter Egger...no one squats and the Easter Egger is very petite compared to everyone else.
